Meet our apprentices

Be inspired by successful apprentice stories from across our business.

Jake Dexter – Warehouse Operative

Jake successfully finished his apprenticeship last year and has gone on to secure a full time role with us. Read more to find out about the valuable skills Jake developed during his apprenticeship.

How far into the apprenticeship are you?

“I’ve finished! I successfully completed a 12-month apprenticeship in Oct 2024.”

Why were you interested in the apprenticeship?

“I don’t always listen to my Dad, but when he told me about the apprenticeship, I decided to apply. The year-long programme provided the perfect opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience, whilst also earning a wage. Plus, my Dad has worked for Carwood for 17 years, so I knew that it was a great place to work too.”

Tell me about your experience so far…

“It was a challenge at first. Like starting any new job with a company, there was lots to learn – new faces, new ways of working, new routines (I’m still not keen on the early starts). But thanks to the on-the-job support I received from my mentor, and a bunch of friendly people, I was soon able to get to grips with the role. And make some great friends too. So much so, that since completing the apprenticeship, I’ve secured a permanent position working in the rotating electrics department. I hope this is just the start of a successful career with Carwood.”

What was your favourite thing about the apprenticeship?

“Although I’ve developed lots of new skills, learning how to drive and operate forklift trucks, and gain my licence, has to be up there – no pun intended.”

What challenges did you face and how have you overcome them?

“Asides from being a newbie, I joined straight out of education, so had very little on-the-job experience. Whilst school gave me a good academic grounding, the apprenticeship has opened up a whole world of practical skills. Things that may have seemed obvious to everyone else, like the IT system for example, were all new to me, so it took a little longer, and lots of questions, to perform some tasks. But that’s what I love about working here; I’ve not only learnt new business skills, like the computer system, but I’ve grown as a person too. So now when I’m not sure on something, I have the confidence to either ask a colleague for help or use my newfound problem-solving skills to deal with it myself. I feel I’m a lot more independent and am ready and able to take on new challenges.”

Tell me a non-work-related fact about yourself…

“I enjoy playing and watching football. Being based at Ollerton, it goes without saying that I’m a huge Nottingham Forest fan. At the time of writing this, our season is going better than we could have ever dreamed. I just hope Nuno and the boys can deliver the same success next year.”
