Be inspired by successful apprentice stories from across our business.
Ryan is from our Telford branch. He’s completed his level 2 and 3, as well as an NVQ level 3 in manufacturing and mechatronics and is now in the final year of his Higher National Certificate (HNC) in engineering. He’s learnt so much during the 6 years he’s spent with us, find out what his favourite parts have been below.
“Time has flown and I’m currently in my 6th year. My original apprenticeship was 4 years long. I enjoyed it that much that I’m now in the second and final year of a HNC.”
“Whilst at school, I had the chance to do my work experience at Carwood, which I loved, so doing an apprenticeship here was a natural next step. Plus, I’ve always been fascinated by military equipment, and to be able to work in a field I’m interested in, while picking up some qualifications, was a real bonus. Not everyone gets to combine a passion with their job, so I feel kind of lucky.”
“It’s been a great mix of college learning and getting hands-on experience in a real work environment. At college, I’ve picked up skills like machining, welding, and wiring, plus lots about quality, health and safety, CAD, and PLCs. My time in the workshop at Carwood has allowed me to finesse these skills, whilst expanding my know-how in other areas, like electrics. I’ve even worked on fuel pumps, evaporators, and wiring panels, which will stand me in good stead for the future.”
“Learning from others! I enjoy getting stuck in and trying out things I’ve seen others do. My favourite has been learning to weld and machine, along with the domestic wiring section. It’s been amazing having a mentor to show me the ropes and teach me how to do it myself.”
“I quickly discovered that working in a business is very different to being in a classroom and this took some adjustment. Whilst I learnt a lot at college, applying this knowledge in a work environment was a little more challenging. But by putting into practice what I’d already learnt, I was soon able to identify any gaps in my learning. And when I didn’t know, I either did my own research, or asked my mentor. They were always on hand to offer help and advice and help me grow. For me, that’s the most valuable part of an apprenticeship scheme.”
“I’m a tech geek at heart. I’ve recently built my own computer. From selecting the parts to the final assembly, it was a rewarding journey.”
