Meet our apprentices

Be inspired by successful apprentice stories from across our business.

Yash Raj Sondhi – Level 3 Business Administration

Yash is a former Cadet and spent 6 years with them rising up the ranks, until he was promoted to the role of Contingent Commander 2IC (Second in Command). He now spends his time as a contract administrator working in our Birmingham office. Find out more about his journey as a Carwood apprentice.

How far into the apprenticeship are you?

“I started back in November 2023 and I’m excited to have my end-point assessment in February. By the time you read this I might have graduated!”

Why made you interested in the apprenticeship?

“I used to work in construction, but I realised I wanted to try something new in an office setting. The business administration apprenticeship was just what I needed to make that switch. The location is ideal for me and having been a cadet, there’s always been a strong personal connection with the military. Knowing that Carwood has a rich heritage in defence and actively supports the Armed Forces community was a real bonus.”

Tell me about your experience so far…

“From the very first day, I got to connect with so many people, and it has been such a great learning journey. Just a couple of months in, I was given my own contract to manage with the support of my fantastic mentor, and now I’m overseeing some pretty big contracts! I’ve been part of the Hydraulics Programme, where I was responsible for creating a core allocation system, including building shelves for our physical products and logging everything on our Kinetic software. Plus, I put together some PowerPoint presentations and Excel documents for my college plan. I’m currently working as a contract administrator and look forward to further developing in my role at Carwood.”

What is your favourite thing about the apprenticeship?

“I love that no two days are alike, and every customer I work with brings something unique. It’s so important to take the time to get to know them and the systems they use as a company.”

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

“There has been a couple of tech issues along the way, but I’ve been able to think on my feet and meet my deadlines. Thanks to the training and support I’ve received, and the growing confidence that’s been instilled in me as an apprentice, I’ve been able to tackle any challenges that come my way.”

Tell me a non-work-related fact about yourself…

“I was in the Cadets for 6 years where I learnt to safely use and handle rifles. I must have had a good eye and a very steady hand, because I was asked to train others, and take part in competition shoots. I also helped cadets on overnight camps and hikes, as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. Near the end of my time, I was promoted to the role of Contingent Commander 2IC, making me Second in Command of the entire unit. This was a huge honour.”
