What is Direct Vision Standard?
Implemented by the Mayor of London, the Direct Vision Standard is designed to improve the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other road users – the vision being to eliminate all deaths and serious injuries on London’s transport network by 2041.
From 1 March 2021, all commercial vehicles over 12 tonnes operating within Greater London, must meet the minimum DVS standard and obtain a safety permit. Failure to comply will result in a penalty charge notice of up to £550.
What is DVS Star Rating?
DVS legislation uses a star rating – it measures how much a driver can see from their cab, 0 being the lowest, and 5, the highest. Vehicle manufacturers will issue a star rating for your vehicle, however if it does not meet the minimum requirement – 3-stars from October 2024 – additional safety systems will be required to drive in the Greater London area, without incurring a fine.

What’s Changing?
To meet the initial Direct Vision Standard, vehicles had to have a one-star rating or fit a Safe System.
However, from October 2024 onwards, vehicles will be required to have a minimum 3-star rating or fit the Progressive Safe System (PSS).
